Kempner keeps the teeth-gritting fury of the original, and she fleshes it out with full-band dynamics, building to a real clangor that was always under the song’s surface. Palehound’s version of “Southern Belle” just rules. The Pacific Northwest, the nineties, and early-adulthood angst are an inseparable Holy Trinity of sorts. Either/Or was recorded in several locations, mostly in Portland, Oregon while Smith was still a member of Heatmiser and was produced by Smith, Tom Rothrock and Rob Schnapf. This year, she wrote about Either/Or for Under The Radar. Recorded mostly in Portland, Oregon, the hushed, no-fuzz and discreet character of Elliott Smith’s music might also hide something else: Either/Or, released on February 25, 1997, is not-so secretly one of the best albums of the nineties. Either/Or is the third studio album by American singer-songwriter Elliott Smith. Last year, she appeared on the podcast My Favorite Elliott Smith Song. Kempner is a big, vocal Elliott Smith fan. The most alluring numbers, however, are still his quietly melancholy acoustic ones. Listeners formed intimate connections with his work, which is why they’re still listening to albums like 1997’s Either/Or nearly two decades later. Several of the songs mimic the melody mastery of pop bands from 1960s. While he still plays all the instruments himself, he plays more of them. Specifically, Palehound have covered “Southern Belle,” the intense, seething track from Smith’s classic 1995 self-titled album. Elliott Smith's third album sees his one-man show getting a little more ambitious. Today, Palehound have taken on a big one.

Since then, Palehound have come out with the singles “ See A Light” and “ Your Boyfriend’s Gun,” and they’ve also released a series of covers: Yo La Tengo on the “Your Boyfriend’s Gun” B-side, Karen Dalton on Polyvinyl’s Stay Home compilation, Mirah on the You Think It’s Like This, But Really It’s Like This reissue. Last year, Palehound, Ellen Kempner’s DIY indie rock project, released the album Black Friday, and it was great.
